Lowell Massachusetts is located in northern Middlesex County and is the fourth largest city in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is located 25 mile north of Boston and is intersected by Route 3, 495, 38 and 133. Lowell is bordered by bordered by Dracut on the north,Tyngsborough on the northwest, Chelmsford on the southwest, and Tewksbury on the east. Lowell also provides a commuter rail stop that will get you to Boston in about 40 minutes.
Lowell was incorporated in 1826 which at that time went through a huge population explosion as it became an industrial giant. Prior to the 1800’s Lowell was part f Chelmsford as a farming community. By 1850 Lowell was the largest manufacturing center in the nation. Lowell’s manufacturing was centered around the textile industries which you will see remnants of the old mill buildings though out the city. Lowell drew many of the Irish from the “potato famine” and many of the workers for the textile mills became the girls working in the mills to help support their families. Lowell’s rich history in the industrial revolution can be seen throughout the Lowell National Park.
By 1920 hard times starting falling on Lowell and went by the wayside like many of New England’ old mill cities. Come 1980 Lowell started going through a huge revitalization. Lowell is now what I like to call a little city that acts like a big city. It is a destination community for the greater area. From cultural events to music and sporting events Lowell has a lot to offer. The downtown has been revitalized into shopping residence’s and restaurants. Lowell is well know for it’s annual folk festival, the Tsongas Arena and the Lowell Spinners a Red Sox farm team. That is just a small glimpse of what the city has to offer.
Lowell’s largest employers are Lowell General Hospital and The University of Massachusetts. Lowell is now a thriving, ever evolving community that offers very affordable housing with in an easy commute of Boston.
