About Dracut MA (01826)
Dracut Massachusetts is located in Northern Middlesex County, in the Greater Lowell area part of the Merrimack Valley region. The town is approximately 21.36 square miles and is bordered by Lowell and Tewksbury to the south, Pelham New Hampshire to the north, Tyngsborough to the west and Methuen and Andover to the East.
Prior to settlement in 1653 Dracut was know as Augumtocuooke and area where the Pennacook Indians settled. It fell under the protection of Chelmsford until it was settled in 1701. Part of the early town was set aside as the “Praying Town for Christianized Indians. Dracut remained relatively primitive and relied on fishing, lumbering and milling as the center of its economy. Come the mid-1800’s Dracut started to rely more heavily on paper and textile making.
Today Dracut is primarily a bedroom community with many parts of the community still having a very rural feel.
