Tewksbury is located in Northern Middlesex County, in the Greater Lowell area part of the Merrimack Valley region. The town is approximately 21.6 square miles and is bordered by Lowell to the northwest, Dracut to the north, Andover to the northeast, Wilmington to the southeast, and Billerica to the southwest. Tewksbury also meets the town of Chelmsford at a point in the middle of the Concord River along with Lowell and Billerica.
The town of Tewksbury was settled in 1637 from Billerica and was incorporated in 1734. The original economic base was farming and lumbering. By the turn of the 1900’s Tewksbury make became more commercial due to it’s proximity to Lowell. It was quite well known for its greenhouse and was known as the carnation town for awhile.
One of the more notable locations is the Tewksbury State Hospital which was originally built as “almshouse” in the mid-1800s. One of the most notable patients was Anne Sullivan, who later became a tutor to Helen Keller.
Today there are many small businesses and national chains running along route 38. The largest employers in Tewksbury are the State Hospital, Demoulas Corp. and Merrill Corp.

Tewsksbury provides a good school system to it’s residents. The town has recently completed a new high school. Some of the more unique features of the school include “airport style” restrooms for students, shared “prep” areas behind science and art classrooms, a TV studio and two oversized lecture halls that can accommodate three or four classes meeting together.
