About Wilmington MA (01877)

Wilmington Massachusetts became an independent town in 1730.  It was made up of parts of Woburn and Reading.  You will now find Wilmington to be primarily a suburban community with some larger business parks housing some larger companies.  Wilmington’s economic base was primarily agricultural though the early 20th century.

In the early 19th century Wilmington was know to be the largest supplier of hops and had numerous hopyards throughout the community.  The Middlesex Canal was established in 1802 and was used until about 1852.  The canal ran from Lowell to Boston and was a major route to carry goods from the Wilmington and the surrounding communities.  You can still see remnants of the canal in Wilmington today.  The establishment of the rail between Lowell and Boston made the canal obsolete.

Today you will still find a large number of antique homes in Wilmington as well as much newer homes.  Wilmington is a very popular choice for home buyers.  It is located right off of 93.  Wilmington is located just 15 miles from Boston and has two train stops.

Analog Devices, Charles River Laboratories and Textron Systems are some of the largest employers in Wilmington MA.

Wilmington is located in Middlesex County Massachusetts and bordered by Andover on the north, North Reading and Reading to the east, Woburn to the south with Burlington, Tewksbury and Billerica bordering on the west.
