A Little About Haverhill’s History

Haverhill Massachusett’s roots were that of a farming community during the mid-1600s.  It was made up of Puritans from the Newbury Plantation.  Haverhill was originally known as Pentucket when it was purchased from the Indians in the 1640s.  Believe it or not, Haverhill was considered a “frontier” town through much of the 17th and 18th centuries and was subject to many Indian raids. 

12 miles of the Merrimack River flow through the heart of Haverhill which helped shaped its importance as a major industrial city.

By the late 18th century and through the 19th century Haverhill was a major American industrial center.  It was a major manufacturer of textiles and leather as well as having a thriving shipbuilding industry.  Up until the early 20th century, Haverhill was the largest manufacturer of shoes and is still known as Queen Slipper City.  

Old brick factories are now converted into housing and shops in the downtown. The Highlands section shows off some incredible Victorian homes that provided housing for the wealthy factory owners. Bradford MA, a village of Haverhill, located south of the river streets lined with bungalows and American four square homes that helped the growing population during the early 20th century.

Haverhill’s largest employers are Essent Health Care, Holy Family Hospital and Northern Essex Community College.
