About Wilmington MA (01887)

Wilmington Massachusetts was settled from Reading and Woburn in 1630.  At that time Wilmington one considered frontier land.

Through the 1800’s and early 1900’s Wilmington provided fruits and vegatables to the south.  Earlier on, hops was one of Wilmington’s larger productions and was known for its “hop yards”.  One of the biggest industries in Wilmington was tanning because of the Perry Cutler Tannery.   The Lowell Canal runs through Wilmington and through the 1850’s was the major transport of goods until the railroad cam through.

Today Wilmington MA is a residential community with a small section of storefronts along route 38 and a few commercial business parks. Wilmington’s largest employers are Analog Devices, Textron Systems and Charles River Labs.

Wilmington is bordered by Andover on the north with North Reading and Reading to the east, Woburn on the south and Burlington to the southwest, Billerica to the west and Tewksbury to the northwest.
