The town is approximately 9.9 square miles and is bordered bordered by North Reading on the north, Lynnfield and Wakefield on the east, Stoneham on the south, Woburn on the southwest and west and Wilmington to the west.
Reading was settled in the 1630’s from Massachusetts Bay Colonists from Lynn looking for an in land plantation and was incorporated in 1644. It was originally called “Lynn Village”. Reading played an active role in the American Revolution, engaging in many battles throughout the area.
In the early 1800’s the Andover-Medford Turnpike was built, which is now know as Route 28. The building of the turnpike opened up many commercial opportunities as it provided easy access to Boston and south of Reading. By the late 1800’s Reading was a manufacturing community with many furniture manufacturers. In the 1900’s with the building of the rail, Reading became more of a residential community as it is today.
Route 28 provides residents with many small businesses and shopping with a commuter rail stop right off the downtown.
