Self Storage Rental and What You Need to Know

Self Storage Rental- Everything you need to knowYou may be a first-time self storage rental customer and have many questions about how renting a storage unit works.

Your needs may be short-term or long-term.  You could be involved in a move and need to temporarily store your belongings or you could be trying to free up valuable space in your home.

Storage facilities can be a great way to conveniently and cost effectively secure your belongings when you don’t have a spot to store items or just need extra storage.

While there is some commonality between storage rental facilities bear in mind they are independent businesses and rules, costs and sizes can vary from one to another.

What Is A Self Storage Rental?

“Self-storage” is exactly what it implies.

The difference between full-service storage and self-storage is full service will pack, move and store your items for you.

With self-storage you are responsible to pack, move and load your items yourself.  Basically, you are just renting a storage unit, there are no other services provided.

Some Reasons Why You Might Want A Storage Unit

Seasonal Storage

A storage unit can be great for seasonal storage of outdoor equipment, sporting equipment or holiday decorations that have a limited shelf life every year but can tie up a lot of valuable space in your home or apartment.

New Home Not Ready

You may find, as a renter or homebuyer, there is a time-lapse where your new home might not be ready.  Self storage units are the perfect solution to store your entire home temporarily.

Free Up Space In Your Home

There are a bunch of different scenarios where you may want to free up space in your home.  A growing family, time to de-clutter your home, etc…  But, for whatever reason, you may not be ready to part with your belongings.  A storage unit will allow you to free up your space and access important items when needed.

Home Renovations

Often when it comes time to renovate your home, you need to empty the areas the contractors will be working.  The question becomes where do you store your items?

Renting a storage unit would be a perfect solution to temporarily house the contents of rooms in your home until the work is complete.

College or Military Storage

College students may want to temporarily store their items near campus instead of lugging all their belongings home, or a serviceman can store their items while on deployment.

A self-storage rental unit would be perfect for either situation.

Item Specific Rental Units

There are self storage units that are specific to many vehicles…. motorcycles, cars, boats, RVs, etc…  They are either in completely enclosed or just parking spots.  These units can be a great way to store your extra vehicles or recreational vehicles.

Business

A self-storage unit can be perfect for many different business needs.  You can store business records, overflow stock or tools that may seem to clutter up your main facility.

What To Know When Looking For A Self Storage Rental Unit

If you have never rented a self storage unit before, there are certain things you should consider before selecting a self storage facility.  Make sure you call around and compare the different options available to you so you can find the right facility to suit your individual needs.

What Will You Be Storing?

Take a few minutes and gives some thought about what you will be storing. Of course, it doesn’t have to be written in stone, but take a moment and jot down a few thoughts on what you would like to move into a storage unit.

Knowing what you are storing and the value can determine what kind of self storage you need, the level of security and whether you may want to consider insurance on the contents or not.  You could be storing high-value items, important sentimental items, or even household overflow that may have little financial value or sentimental value.  Will you need a climate controlled unit?  Will you need regular access to the items?

How Long Will You Need To Store Your Items?

Knowing how long you need to store your items will help you shop for the best facility and price, along with defining the items you want to store.

There are some people who just need the additional space and they are looking at long-term storage, while others just need storage temporarily.

If you only need storage for a month or two, maybe you can consider an on-site portable storage pod.

Accessibility

Some people just pack their storage units and don’t need regular access to their storage units.  Others may want to get in and out of their storage locker on a regular basis or at least several times a year, to move items in and out.

Our local Cube Smart in Haverhill has extended access from 6am until 10pm daily.  But other facilities may be open 24/7 with complete self-service access with a keypad. Other facilities can have limited hours like 10-4 or in some cases only be accessed by appointment.

Find a facility that provides you access to your storage unit when you need it.

Consider Location

If you will be frequently visiting your storage locker, make sure you rent a storage unit conveniently located to you you.

Units rented in a major city may be more expensive than in suburban locations. But it will be important to find a balance between cost and convenience.  With all things being equal, rent a unit as close to you as possible for ease of access.

Security

In some facilities all the units are accessed from the outside, in others, some or all of the units are housed in a building.

Often most storage facilities are fenced and are the first line of defense in securing the property.  Most facilities have a gate or door or even both that is accessed by a keypad and renters let themselves in and out. There can also be video recorded throughout the day or even a monitored video surveillance system.  Onsite personell for some or all of the day can also increase security.

Compare security from one facility to the next and find a level of security you are comfportable with.

Climate Controlled or Non-Climate Controlled Self Storage

When looking for a self storage rental, you will come across the option of heated and cooled space or not climate-controlled space.  The decision is entirely yours.

If you are storing furniture, antiques, collectibles, clothing or anything of value you will want to consider a climate controlled unit to prevent extreme temperature swings and the possibility of mold.

Any items will benefit from a climate-controlled storage unit, so make sure you compare prices.  You may find climate-controlled unit will cost roughly the same as a non-climate-controlled unit.

Can I Pull Up To My Self Storage Rental Unit?

You will have to rent in a facility that has access to your storage unit accessed from the outside if you want to pull up and park directly in front of your unit to load and unload.  Which is extremely convenient for frequent loading and unloading or extremely heavy items.

Is There Equipment To Move My Items?

If you can’t drive right to your unit, like a multi-level facility with an elevator, make sure they provide adequate equipment to load and unload your items and be able to move them easily to your locker.

Most facilities will have moving carts or other equipment available to move your belongings around, but make sure you ask before renting a unit.

What Can’t I Store In My Unit?

Rules will vary greatly from facility to facility.  Make sure you understand the dos and don’ts of what you can store in your unit as well as what you can and can’t do with your self storage rental.

Here is a short list of what most storage units won’t allow you to store (for what I hope are obvious reasons).  Firearms, food, fur, hazardous materials, living or dead things, money, priceless items, stolen property and tires.

Things You Probably Can’t Do In Your Storage Unit?

What you can do in your rented storage unit falls back to the rules of the storage facility you are renting from.

You can’t live in the unit as well as conduct business, work on cars short of getting it running, use it as a workshop, etc…  Your storage rental is strictly for storing items, that’s it.

Of course, there are exceptions and you may find a facility that will allow you to do certain activities, like hold band practice.  But, for anything outside storage of allowable items, make sure you check with management first.

Will I Need A Lock For My Self Storage Unit?

While your facility will have security measures to keep your items safe you will still need to provide a lock for your storage unit.

A padlock or combination lock will certainly do the trick but consider a disc lock for the best security.

Can I Rent A Storage Unit For A Week?

The minimum self storage rental will most likely be for a month.

Will I Need Insurance For A Self Storage Rental?

The answer is not so straightforward.  Many homeowner insurance policies may cover a certain percentage of the cost of items in storage out of the house.  If you want your items insured and you own a home, consult with your insurance agent first.  You may already be covered.

In addition, the storage facility will offer insurance coverage if you don’t have a homeowners policy or if adequate coverage is not provided by your homeowner’s insurance.

What Size Rental Units Are Available And What Is The Cost?

Self storage unit sizes and self storage rental prices can vary greatly from facility to facility and region to region.  The rental prices here seem to be on the higher side compared to others.

2×5 Climate Controlled, Elevator $39 per month
5×5 Climate Controlled, Elevator $72 per month
10×10 Climate Controlled, Elevator $135 per month
10×15 Climate Controlled, Elevator $222 per month
10×20 Climate Controlled, Elevator $250 per month
10×20 Outside Access $360 per month
8×26 Climate Controlled, Elevator $250 per month
10×30 Climate Controlled, Elevator $353 per month

Find Cheap Self Storage Rental Near Me?

Like anyone, you’re going to want to find the best deal you can on a unit.  Google self-storage unit near me and start with the storage facilities closest to you.

Some sites provide prices and you can reserve a rental unit right online.  Other facilities you may have to call to get a price quote.  Start by having a rough idea of what size unit you need.

When doing my research, I found a few things to be true.  Big national companies seemed to be more expensive, but you are probably paying for increased security and better access.

Outside access with no climate control seemed to be cheaper than inside climate-controlled units.  The reason being the facility uses up space for traffic to get around the outside access units that could house more units.

If you don’t need to drive up to your unit, an inside climate-controlled unit will probably be cheaper.

Smaller, cheaper facilities often had more limited access or were only available by appointment only.

Make sure you not only shop for the best price but also for features that are important to you.

Tips For Packing A Self Storage Rental Unit

Now that you have a self storage rental you want to take the time and pack it properly for maximum efficiency.

Use Clear Covered Bins

Cardboard boxes can certainly get the job done. But clear bins are stronger will stack easier and last longer.  Plus you can see inside a clear bin and know what is inside.

Keep Your Bins Uniform

Try to stay with the same tpe and size bin.  Of course you will need several sizes but limit it to 3 or 4.  By utilizing the same bins it makes packing and stacking much easier.

Maintain A Walkway

If you have a deep unit make sure you maintain a walkway to make sure you have access to all your items when you need them.

Map Your Unit

A little extra time while loading the unit will make your life easier down the road.  Keep a map of your unit and where things are stored so you can put your hands on an item in a few short minutes in the future.

Utilize Dead Space

Think about utilizing dead space like drawers in a dresser or cabinets.  Even an empty refrigerator can be utilized to store small boxes to maximize the space in your rental unit.

Summary

Self storage facilities can vary greatly in their offerings, security, accessibility and cost.  Call around and find the balance that best fits your storage needs.

USPS Change of Address

USPS Change of Address

Changing your address is just part of moving.  It doesn’t matter if you are moving from apartment to apartment, buying your first home, or moving up to a bigger home.

The fact is, amongst all that chaos, you need to notify the United States Post Office of your change of address so your important mail can follow you to your new location.  Once you submit the form it will take 10 to 14 days for your mail forwarding to start with the USPS.

How To Change Your Address With The USPS

There are two ways to complete your post office address change..

Online

You can change your address with the USPS at your convenience online.  The official online change of address form from the United States Postal Service can be accessed at https://moversguide.usps.com/mgo/disclaimer.

The address change form is easily completed and only takes a few minutes to fill out.  You will be asked to verify your identity with a credit card and you will be charged a fee of $1.05 to change your address online.  The charge to your card actually is what verifies your identity.

usps change of address online

In-Person At A USPS Location

If you would prefer not to change your address online, go to your local post office and request the Mover’s Guide packet. Inside the packet, you will find PS Form 3575.

Once you have completed the form, hand it to a postal worker at the counter, mail it in from home or drop it in the box inside your postal office.

There is no fee for submitting your USPS address change form either in person or mailing it in.

Avoid Overpaying For Changing Your Address

There are a ton of websites that will “submit” your change of address form for a fee…. a substantial fee!  I have seen people pay up to $60 dollars for a change of address by using a third-party site.  There is no need to pay someone to change your address and pay exhorbitant fees.  A change of address can be done with out the need of one of these third party services.

Here are some tips for preventing overpaying for your change of address:

  • Make sure you are on the USPS website.  The URL of the website should have USPS in it.
  • If you are charged anything other than $1.05 for an online address change you are not on the official USPS website.

The good news if you overpay your COA will usually be submitted, but still, there is no reason to pay more than $1.05 for your address change online.

USPS change of address don't overpay

Who Else Should I Notify of An Address Change?

Submitting a USPS address change form allows the USPS to forward any of your mail to a new address.  The United States Postal Service only provides mail forwarding to your new address but does not notify any senders of your address change.

Consider notifying your banks, utilities, medical suppliers, IRS etc… that you have changed addresses.

Companies you should notify to stop services and have final bills forwarded to your new address.

  • Gas and Electric
  • Oil and Propane
  • Phone, Cable, and Internet Providers
  • Water/Sewage Department
  • Garbage/Recycling Company
  • Home Security Company
  • Landscaper/Lawn

You will also have financial services who you should notify of your change of address.

  • Bank where you have your checking and savings
  • Credit card services
  • Automobile loans
  • Student Loans
  • IRS

And, just as a final reminder notify:

  • Subscription services
  • Friends and Family
  • Medical providers

It is a good idea to start writing down companies you need to notify as the mail comes in two or three months prior to your move.

Make not of your account numbers as well, you will need those to change your address.  For most financial and service companies it is a matter of logging into your online account to change you or you can make a quick call to customer support to have your mail sent to your new address.

Storage Pod- Everything You Need To Know

Buying a new home means moving.  And when it comes to moving you have a handful of different options to consider….

….packing and moving yourself, renting a U-haul and hiring labor, hiring a moving company, using a storage pod, etc…

There many options when you move and finding the balance between convenience and cost will require a little homework.

Using storage pods to make your move has some advantages that other moving methods don’t have.

A storage pod rental can be a great choice if you need to move but not sure where you are going to end up.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about using a storage pod to make a move.

What Is A Storage Pod?

The term PODS means Portable On Demand Storage, which is a great description of how on-site storage containers work.   PODS is actually a trademarked name from the most recognized name in portable moving containers.  Though the term pods is meant to describe any portable moving or storage container.

A storage pod is a box of varying construction.  It has the ability to be secured with a lock and delivered to your location to be packed for your move.

When you are packed and ready for your new location, you schedule a pickup and the unit is brought to your new home for you to unload on your timeline.

Or, if you are not moving to your new home immediately, your storage pod is housed at a storage facility until you are ready for delivery to your new location.

What Companies Offer On-site Moving Containers or Storage Pods?

As I mentioned, PODS is not the only company offering moving containers.  If you google “storage pod near me” you will most likely see these large national companies.

  • U-Pack ReloCube
  • 1-800-PACK-RAT
  • Zippy Shell-  Zippy Shell merged with 1-800-Pack-Rat
  • PODS
  • SMARTBOX

There also may be the option of finding a small storage pod rental company that is more regional rather than a national company.  Bay State Pod Rental is a popular option here in Massachusetts.

Just google “storage pods near me” and get a list of pod rental companies that will deliver to your site.  Most of the big moving container companies allow you to plug in your information and get a quote online.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Moving With A Storage Pod?

Like everything, there are pros and cons of using storage pods during a move.

Srorage pods are dropped in your driveway

Pros of Using AStorage Pod

Pack and Move On Your Schedule

The biggest advantage of using pod storage during your move is you rent the container for a month at a time.  It allows you time to pack and unpack the storage unit over any length of time that works for you.

All you do is pay a small monthly fee for the storage container while it is onsite.

Minimize Costs

Another advantage of using a storage pod is it can be stored on the site you are leaving or your destination until you are ready to unload.  You pack over several weeks or months and only pay a low monthly rental fee for the on-site portable moving containers you use.

Shipping the container can also be less than hiring a full-service mover because the truck picking up your container is also moving containers from other renters, spreading out the cost of the shipping.

Easy Storage Between Destinations

If you have time between leaving your first home and going to your second home, many companies allow you to store your storage pod at their facility for a low monthly fee.

The advantage is the container does not need to be unloaded at the storage facility and reloaded for its final destination.  The pod is stored as-is full of your belongings.

Loads At Ground Level

Finally, unlike a truck, a rented storage pod is loaded at ground level.  It can help make lighter work of your move.  It certainly beats going up and down a loading ramp with heavy furniture.

storage pods are loaded at ground level

Cons of Using A Storage Pod

Not Climate Controlled

One big disadvantage of using a storage pod is your rented storage pod is not heated or air-conditioned.  While it is weatherproof it is subject to the heat and cold of its surrounding environment.

A storage pod rental is probably not a great idea for expensive furniture or items of value like artwork or antiques.  Before renting a moving container consider if it is right for the items you are moving.

Need A Place To Put It

You also need a large enough level surface to place your storage pod or pods on at both sites.  Renting storage pods may not be a good solution for moving from a condo or an apartment with limited space where they may not even allow you to store a moving container.

Security

Finally, remember your moving container will be stored outside in your driveway or on the street.  It may not be as secure as you would like.

Less Control Of Arrival

You have a little bit less control of when your storage pod will arrive.  Often a truck is loaded with more than one pod for deliveries on a given day.

What Sizes Do Moving Containers Come In?

Storage pod sizes can range from 6-16 feet.

A 7-8 foot unit will handle about one room, while a 16-foot storage pod may fit a small apartment.

Larger homes will require you to rent more than one pod to fit all of your contents. A moderately furnished 2500 square foot home may require up to 3 16-foot pods.

Each company has its own size pod or different size pods.  Do some research to see what works for you.

A Word On Portable Shipping Container Construction

When renting your portable moving container pay close attention to the construction. Some are made from steel, steel frames with sheet aluminum skin, plastic or construction grade wood.

The construction materials will dictate how heavy of a load the container can handle.  An all-steel container can handle about twice as much weight as a wooden container.

Make sure you are getting a quality storage pod that will protect your belongings from the elements aswell as theft. Your pod should also be constructed in a manner that can handle the rigors of a move.

What Does A Storage Pod Rental Cost?

A storage pod rental will cost more than a self-move with a U-Haul truck but less than hiring a full-service mover.  Rental costs for a storage container will vary depending on many factors.  Make sure you call or get an online quote for storage pod pricing so there are no surprises.

  • Size of the units and how many you rent.
  • Deleted:
  • How long you rent the storage containers.
  • Deleted:
  • The distance to your final destination.
  • Deleted:
  • The season.

I visited one website moving container website and received an online quote for a 16-foot on-site moving container for one month.

Rental One Month $219
Initial Delivery $117
Pick Up and Move less than 15 miles $110
Final Pickup $110
Total $556

This is just a rough estimate of what a small move with a storage pod rental would cost.  Definitely get your own quote for your specific circumstances.

To be cost-effective and save space in your rental pod, make sure you either get rid of your junk or find ways to recycle your unwanted items before packing your container.  Don’t move items you no longer want.

Do I Need Contents Insurance For My Storage Pod?

When you rent an online storage container, make sure you understand that while you may pay for insurance for damage to the pod itself, the contents are not covered and are probably not covered.

Content insurance is not included in the rental price.  Before purchasing a policy with the container company check with your homeowners or renters insurance to see if off-site storage is covered and if in fact a storage pod on your site is actually covered.

If your homeowner or renters insurance is not adequate you can usually get insurance through the company you are renting the pod from.  Don’t overlook getting the proper insurance coverage for items stored in your pod.

Can You Do A Long Distance Move With A Storage Pod?

Storage pods can be used as just as easily for a long-distance move as it can a local move.

The rental prices and pick-up and drop-off fees remain the same as if you were doing a local move.  If you are doing a long-distance move the shipping fee for your POD can be sizeable.  They are still being shipped by truck.

But, many of the fees surrounding the move will make a long-distance move less expensive with a moving container than a full-service move.

Other Uses For Storage Pods

On-site moving containers can be used for other than just moving from one home to another.

When selling your home you may have more belongings than you want to leave in your home to optimize showings.  An on-site storage container can help stage your home.

A storage pod can be kept in the driveway neatly tucked away in a storage pod until you actually make your move.  Either it can be offloaded by your movers or you may decide just to have it shipped to your new address.

Deleted:

Or, are you doing major renovations and need to empty a room or even an entire house while the work is being done?  A storage pod can be a perfect way to safely store your belongings while you are having the work done.

Questions To Ask When Renting A Storage Pod Rental

  • What is the storage pod constructed of?
  • What is the monthly rental fee of the moving container?
  • Am I responsible for damage to the pod while it is in my possession, if so can I insure the moving container?
  • What does insurance cost for my contents?
  • If I take longer than a month to pack or unpack will it be easy to extend my rental?
  • How quickly can I have my pod delivered to my new location once I call for a pickup?
  • Do you have local storage for my pod if my move is delayed?
  • What comes with the rental of an onsite moving container?

Summary

Pods can be one option for you when you are moving from one home to another.  It can save you money compared to a traditional mover coming to load and unload their truck.

The two really distinct advantages are you can pack and unpack the storage pod over a period of time and the ability to easily store your moving container if you are not moving directly from one home to another.

If those are attractive features for you consider renting a storage pod for your next move.
