Haverhill Massachusett’s roots were that of a farming community during the mid-1600’s. It was mad up of Puritans from the Newbury Plantation. Haverhill was originally known as Pentucket when it was purchased from the indians in the 1640’s. Believe it or not Haverhill was considered a “frontier” town through much of the 17th and 18th century and was subject to many indian raids. 12 miles of the Merrimack River flow through the heart of Haverhill which helped shaped its importance as a major industrial city.
By the late 18th century and through the 19th century Haverhill was a major American industrial center. It was a major manufacturer of textiles and leather as well as having a thriving ship building industry. Up until the early 20th century Haverhill was the largest manufactures of shoes and is still know as the Queen Shoe City. Old brick factories are now converted into housing and shops as well as a large variety of victorian homes through out the city define Haverhill as a classic Queen Anne City.
While most of the industry is gone from Haverhill, the old city still stands and the downtown offers plenty of shops and restaurants. Hverhill is a popular choice for homeowners due to its large inventory of affordable housing. Haverhill also has two trains stops offering commuters an alternative to commute to Boston.
Haverhill is bordered by Methuen and North Andover to the south, Salem NH, Atkinson, NH, Plaistow NH and Merrimac to the north, West Newbury and Grovleand to the east.
